Main exercise final evaluation

The whole coursework process has been a very interesting and enjoyable. When my group and I began the preliminary exercise I was completely new to film making as this was my first experience of producing a short film. Previous to the coursework I hadn’t had much experience using video cameras and had absolutely no experience in using any form of video editing software so both the main exercise and the preliminary exercise have taught me a lot about the process of film making. With the main exercise I took on the roles of editor and sound engineer which gave me an opportunity to learn how the editing programmes, windows movie maker and adobe premiere pro work.

When we first started planning our main exercise the group sat down and discussed the possible genres that our film could be. After discussing the possibilities we decided that we were going to produce the opening sequence for a social realist drama. With this in mind we started to develop the main ideas of the film. The story line that we came up with involved a pair of teenagers dealing with issues of crime and a sense of belonging. When thinking about this we researched existing films that conveyed similar themes, the films that we looked at were Green Street,A Way of Life and Kidulthood. We also looked at social realist drama as a genre and the subculture stereotype ‘chavs’. This gave us more insight into the style of the opening titles for these types of film and also the codes and conventions that needed to be conveyed.

Our story opens as two people, a boy and a girl, are getting ready to go out. The girl is getting dressed to go to a party and is shown putting on make up and styling her hair to show that she is a typical young woman getting ready for a night out. The boy on the other hand is shown to be dressed in quite scruffy clothes and stares at him self in the mirror before getting a knife out of a kitchen drawer and leaving the house. The film is aimed at young people particularly ones growing up in urban environments and I feel that we have been able to portray this well with the choice of music for the opening sequence, the dress codes of the two characters and also the locations that we used.

With the production side of the project my roles were sound engineer and editor. During the preliminary exercise I had the role of camera man but didn’t take much part in the post production aspects so I was excited to learn how this side of things worked. I also helped choose one of the locations and the male actor for our film. When it came to filming I was able to offer help to Amy who was doing the camera work for the main exercise as I had previous expirience with using the camera and I was able to give advice on the framing of some shots that we used. One of the more difficult shots that we had to get was of the male character looking into the mirror. The difficulties arose because the bathroom that we were using was very small and cramped and there wasn’t much room between that bath and the sink. So to get a good shot we had to set the tripod and camera up in the bath as to be able to get the framing that we required.

As the sound engineer I encountered several problems whilst we were filming. The biggest problem was when filming the parts with the male character. There was a dog in the house that we did the filming and even though we were able to put him out in the back garden there was still a lot of unwanted noise created by the dog. The problem was overcome because of the use of music in our film which was able to cover up the sounds made by the dog. The other problem that became and issue that went unnoticed while filming was the sound as the camera person walked up the stairs in the first shot of the female character. This problem became apparent when we came to edit the film. The sound of the foot steps as the camera moves up the steps was very distinct when we were watching back our film. The solution we came up with was to mute the sound from the fist part of the shot. However the sound of the next bit of the shot didn’t seem to fit right after that was removed so we decided to include that scene into the section with the music track playing over the top.

When it came to the editing of the film I was completely new to the software that we had access to. Luckily Mia had experience in using Windows movie maker so she was able to help me out if I was unsure of how to do something. The first thing we did when we started the editing process was to sit down as a group and decide on what shots were the best out of the takes and how they would fit together to create a flowing piece. Once we had the order and sequence of the shots planned out I set about removing the excess from each shot and deciding on how it was going to cut. The most complex shot that I had to edit was the shot where the male character takes the knife out of the drawer. We had filmed to different sequences for this, the first was a mid shot of him removing the knife and putting it into his back pocket and the second was a close up of his hands as he opened the drawer and removed the knife. In the end as a group we decided to edit the two shots together so that you see him walk up to the drawer then it cuts to the close up of his hands picking up the knife and finally back to a mid shot of him putting the knife into his back pocket. We were all very pleased with how the sequenced came together and flowed with the rest of the film. The next big problem was the films title, we had chosen to name the film after the street where the male character was to be living. We decided to film the male character walking past the road sign to end our film but when we watched the shot back on the computer we were unable to see the road sign clearly. We decided to take a still of the road sign from the shot and edit it on the Photoshop program to make it more visible. We the added it to the end of the film and included a fade to bring the picture in and also a fade out to white to end out film.

Over all and I very pleased with how the group work with all the stages of our coursework. Even though at the beginning of the main exercise we had a slight change to the group (the edition of Amy) we were able to help input ideas and give criticisms to help achieve the final product. I learned many new skills whilst completing the course work such as the camera work skills from the preliminary exercise and also all the new skills that picked up when using the editing software.

This is the finished film that me and my group produced.

The First Reflective Main Exercise Blog Entry Thing

Compared to the preliminary exercise, the planning for the main exercise is far more in depth. With the main exercise we have had to look at all the aspects of the genre we have decided (social realist drama) by looking into the codes and conventions that are associated with the genre. Also we needed to look at the stereotypes of ‘Chavs’ as our opening sequence will involve aspects of the ‘Chav’ subculture. This was different with the preliminary exercise as we only had to touch on the ideas of the genre and didn’t have to include information about social aspects such as stereotypes and sub cultures like we have with the main exercise due to the fact that we only had to concentrate on achieving the technical aspects of filming such as the 180 degree rule and continuity. With regards to the story boards we have had to put a lot more detail into them to show what we intend to make. With the preliminary exercise we were able to make a brief storyboard just to give the basic ideas and show how we were going to use the required camera shots. However with the main exercise we have had to think about how we are going to portray the characters and how they will represent the genre and stereotypes.

With the preliminary exercise’s SWOT analysis our group’s weakest points were the lack of experience in operating cameras and time keeping. The fact that time keeping was a weak point was due to the fact that one of the members of the group was absent due to illness for a large portion of the exercise. This meant that completing some the planning took a little longer than we hoped so the time for filming and editing was cut short. We have been able to overcome this with the main exercise because of a slight change in group members. We have kept on top on the planning paperwork by dividing up the tasks so that we haven’t fallen behind. The other weak point with the preliminary exercise was our lack of experience with operating a camera. However even though the preliminary exercise helped us develop new skills in the way of camera work, the main exercise will require us to get some complex camera shots but we also need to concentrate on getting the lighting and sound right as well.

With the main exercise I am hoping to mainly improve my skills when it comes to editing. This is mainly due to the fact that I only helped with the edit of the preliminary exercise in a small way. For example I would off my opinion when a frame had been edited. I will be editing the main exercise so I’ll be able to learn how to use the software and how edit the piece of film to get a good quality finished product. Time keeping/management is another skill that as a group we are improving on because at this point we have completed most of the preproduction paper work apart from the location recce and the risk assessments. With the film section of the main exercise we are looking to gain experience in making sure we have the correct lighting that we desire for the film and getting the right sound. For example the right background sounds to ensure that we get the correct feel within the clip.

Filming and Editing

Myself and my group filmed our preliminary film on Wednesday the 3rd of February. I was the camera operator and was fairly nervous about how well I was going to do. The day before the filming took place I was able to have a look at the camera that I was going to be using and get to grips with how it operated. This was very helpful as it allowed for us to get straight on with film the next day rather than have me learn how the camera worked on the day.
The location that we had chosen for the filming was a set of rooms within Weymouth College’s media block. The rooms M001 and M002 are used as a radio/recording studio. We chose to film in these rooms because the large window that joins the two rooms together was perfect for the idea of our film. The window allowed for us to show the ‘body’ of the unconscious person within a separate room whilst still filming in the same room as the main actors. The only downside to using the room M002 was the fact that there was limited space due to most of the room being taken up by a large desk. This meant that getting into a position to get the framing right was very difficult. I ended up having to stand as far back into the corners of the room as possible to get the desired shots and as not to break the 180 degree rule. For the shot where the unconscious body can be seen through the window we had problems with getting the best framing for the shot. We wanted to get a two shot but with the body within view as well. This was eventually achieved by me standing up against the wall with my back to the actors viewing the shot through the camera’s screen. This was very awkward but we were able to get the shot that we wanted. The other problem with getting this shot was the fact that the lighting in the room made my reflection in the glass of the window very visible. We overcame this by having me stand with my back to the room with my hood up. This rendered my reflection almost invisible. One of the only things I would have done differently when I filmed would have been to use the tripod like a mono pod instead of trying to hold the camera steady. This would have given us better quality shots and also a chance to frame the shots better. The only other problem that occurred on the day of filming was that one of our actors was unable to show up. This nearly meant that we would have been unable to film on that day. However I was able to ask a friend if they could fill in and luckily they could.
With the editing of the film we had to watch each of the takes very carefully to find the best one of each shot and the ones that best fit together. Lilly and Amelia mainly dealt with the editing although I gave my opinion on how the shots fit together and which shots looked the best and had the best sound quality.

Below is the completed film.

First skills audit for the G321 Foundation Production

I believe that the preliminary exercise is going really well despite the fact that there have been some absences within the group. The absence of one of the group members has meant that I and the other member have had an increased workload. This has lead to certain tasks having to be put on hold until we completed the tasks with higher priority. Despite the absence of one of or groups members I feel that we have worked well together to over come the problems that we encountered. We’ve now got a date set for our filming and the rooms and equipment booked. This is the first time that I have experienced the process of creating a short film and I’m really looking forward to the filming process as I will be operating the camera. I hope that I will be able to pick up the skills and techniques that are needed to create short films. The process that I’m most looking forward to learning about and taking part with, is the editing process. I would really like to learn about how films are edited and how the software that is used works. I hope that the skills that this filming exercise will give me can help me produce more short films in my own time.
